ibm thinkpad is the only way to go.

blaw, im not understanding, the higher speed processor's are cheaper than the lower speed?
anyone else?
- swollenelbow0
nospace, my friend got an ibm and he still has nothing but problems...i mean he doesn't know how to use a computer as well as the next guy but still...that really turned me off.
then again on the other end, my other programmer pal has one and swears his life on it. he says they are the best things ever.

I been using a Dell 9100 for a couple months.
If you want a powerful workstation that can also play all the latest games and has a gorgious screen. Than Id highly recommend this laptop.
If you need a stylist-looking laptop for client showcase or a higly portable machine. Than look elsewhere. This thing is heavy and pretty ugly looking.

i'm not too up on hardware (my wife actually spec'ed the machine out for me).
i'm running a 2.4ghz pentium processor, added some misc. stuff (port replicator, software, etc.) and i wanna say it cost about $1,200.

hmm thanks for the info blaw.
anyone have any sony vaio's that are rockin the photoshop and some flash out there?
i like the look of sony's....
meok, you're right, those dell's are monsters, but they have great specs....

I like my acer.
good value for the $ - just wasn't willing to spend more on a MS machine..
- jpea0
ugly as shit, but thinkpad's are super durable and very very quality. i had one that i used as my main machine for a couple years... never had a problem at all.
i'd never buy a vaio again after i had one of their desktops... proprietary pieces of sh*t.
- swollenelbow0
super, that's the one i want, it's soo hot! i am however worried about the processor speed, that's really about it.
jpea, i own a sony vaio desktop and haven't had any problems with it.
i really want that one superbaka mentioned.

I have a sony Vaio, the newer generations are finally getting solid and they're still beautiful as always.
Acer is making some light, very portable, very powerful laptops. I was wary of them at first because of the off brand but I used one for about 3 months and it was a trooper.

I've been searching high and low for a balance between portability, power and aesthetics, and am plumping for something from:
I did have my heart set on a 'Razor', but they've gone and released some new models, so now I'm not so sure.
They're UK-based, which might be awkward, but they're very well put together machines which are always well commended.

wrt proc speed.. yeah its a bit slow, but laptops come in two speeds for me - "not fast enough" and "fast enough." note: i dont do any 3D/games on it. just 2D.
and that thing turns the heads of every mac owner that sees it. :)
you can also rig the camera and wireless to be a webcam. kinda cool around the office.

proc speed isn't telling
like the centrinos for instance, usually have a much slower clock speed but have a much larger on chip cache, which usually makes them faster than the non centrino (or even intel M) chips.
- fate0
jpea, that's very true, the centrino chip feels a bit like Macs...they say they're 1.5ghz but they'll perform about 175% of that.
- Mick0
Get a Pentium M with a Centrino - your batterry will last much longer.
Happy with my dell 8600 - you get lots for your money.

toshiba for price/quality.

I was none to pleased with my vaio 505. Really unreliable for all of that cheddar.
Seems like Fujitsu other brands are makign better built, but less cool looking machines.
