I think the involvement of Processing itself is fairly minimal - according to toxi (the guy who built it) on the UK P5 mailinglist. Most of it seems to be straight Java.

actually, you can produce work however you choose, then export it as processing. what processing really is is an apllication wrapped in a java applet...or something of that nature. i used something similar when i did this site for odyssey - http://www.steelmeetsfeel.com
