So I submitted a design for Threadless.com and they declined it because it was copyrigted material. However, it was a illustration of Johnny Cash that I did by hand. How can an illustration of someone who is dead be copyrighted?

if you do an illustration based on a photo, and the original photo is recognizable, the image is copyrighted.
also, i am assuming johnny cash's image is copyrighted and cannot be reproduced without permission from those in charge of his estate, record company etc.

prolly getting some heat on them for older submissions, i too had one declined, but i understand why since i did break pretty much every copyright protection law in the book

Print them yourself and sell them on the blackmarket?
