I have a real bad DNS dispute kinda thing going on right now with one of my clients. I first picked them up and got paid a little over a month ago for a full ecommerce site project. They first made their site years ago back in 1996 or something and the lady had no idea who held her domain, or who to even contact about hosting. We got the hosting ordeal out of the way and decided to switch over to my hosting company because her current provider didn't even offer DB access.

It takes her 3 weeks to finally find out who is her domain registrar. She forwards me all her login info and URL's to access and all that good stuff. I go in to change the DNS to my servers and I get an error message. So I try again every day for the next 5 days or so and keep getting the same message. I finally call Verio (the registrar) tech support in hopes of clearing this up. They tell me that since SOMEONE (they couldn't tell me who) put in a request for a registrar change...the domain is basically locked and they cant change ANYTHING AT ALL on it until the request either gets approved or denied.

Well back when I first got started on all this, I got my partner so send over a registrar request change just so her hosting and domain will all be in 1 place and she will only have 1 contact to make in the future for any changes. She never replied to the confirmation emails and said that she never actually got them. So my partner cancelled the request about 3-4 weeks ago.

So anyways, now I'm hoping she (the client) might have the email from the original registrar change request (im finding out sometime today) because otherwise I really don't know what to do.

What really gets me about this is Verio claims they have no control over the domain whatsoever just because some registrar put in a request for it to be changed. So in theory I could put in a registrar request to GOOGLE.COM and their domain controls would be locked up until someone replied/denied the confirmation email? Sounds like a bunch of BS to me.

Any suggestions on the situation? I really need to figure something about because I hate keeping clients waiting and I can't work on her site until it's on my server.

didn't read the while thing, but if you need to know who owns a domain, do a whois search:

sounds like you need to make sure you really have full account holder access to the account management, and make sure you know who is recieving the change requests, and also put in a new change or unlock request? They have to have procedures for all this stuff...

well according to verio, the email address contact is correct (not my addy, but the lady that i deal with at the company) and she swears that she never got anything.

Does past stuff really matter? Can't you request a new confirmation be sent? What does Verio suggest you do? what is their date for the current process to end?...
