Okay Im just a lowly programming student that eventually wants to become a web / graphic designer. I do some freelance web design on the cheap every now and again. I was wondering what I can do to this site to make it better:

thanks for any help.

can get rid of the frames

wow ok....
First impression was it is a site for 80's skateboarders.
I think you need to take some time with this....I see problems with most of it. Take some time and photograph the sculptures (not against a garage door). The graphics on the site are too colorful for garden enthusiasts and the colors are comic book not relaxation/art. Your fonts are techy and should be inteligent..i.e. serif fonts.
It's great that you obviously are doing this from scratch, too many people are robbing style when they start out, so keep at it. You'll find something that fits man. Start with that and I expect you to come back next week with something more impressive. :P

bring down your font size
replace all the fonts, esp nav font
get some nice CSS happening on you navigation/copy
there are nicer ways to lay out your thumbnails
have a look around

Okay, I agree with the fonts and the photographs absolutely. I couldn't decide what to do for fonts, so by instinct I went for the techy look, not good I know.
The photos are a bit of an issue becuase the artists live 2-3 hours from me and I can't take the photos myself, they take them and email them to me. And I agree, I've told them to try and get more creative and take better shots.
As for the colors, I really like them, but I agree that it doesn't fit with the subject, so I'll play around with them a bit. Thanks for your input.

love it!

wow I knew I'd get some bashing and snobbery, but this is rough. Though I would like to thank iDp and blackspade for the constructive critisism, you're good people.
What is a good resource for learning about grids? I've been wanting to study that. And on that note, what is a good starting point for someone to start learning design that will help prepare for design school?

holy shit milan!! Thats like 3k worth of books!! I need to get crackin.
UpDog - no sweat. Just keep working at it. Takes a while before you can get a good design voice in your noggin to tell you what is right, takes even longer to get what the suggestions the voice says to actually make it to the canvas. Basically...takes lots of time, but thats all we have no?

There's a real rawness to it that I like that you don't get from people who do this stuff all the time. It doesn't really seem to fit the subject matter though.
