realistic apples

for school, im supposed to make this EPS apple look like a realistic apple, like a red one, a yellow one, &c.
i kind of know how to do this, but i really dont know what im doing, just using gradients/transparencies to get a nice color. other than that im lost.
anyone got any good links for this sort of thing? tutorials?

Check out Brookes' site http://www.lifeinvector.com, she's got great stuff there and if she doesn't have the "gradient mesh" tutorial up, search for info on that tool.
