Do Designers need a union?
- mr_snuggles0
Yes and no. I think they are great in theory, but the decisions made by unions often leave individuals floating down shits creek. But I know there was talk about it in Toronto a little while ago. We could have one for all I know.

I think it would help set guide line to working ours and pay

I think designers are too wrapped up in their own agenda and ethics to work with anymore than 10 people.

Do u guys over in north america have unions?
- blaw0
i worked as a graphic artist at a newspaper a few years back. some areas of the company were union, some weren't.
when it came time to vote whether or not for my dept. to join the union it was nearly unanimous to not join. at the time i put a lot of thought/research into it and joining was not something i was interested in.

from what im thinking a union wouldnt be a good idea for designers, we're not like factory workers.
- Chimp0
although it feel like it some times
- blaw0
that was my thought, too, warheros.
as a designer you work late. that's just how it goes.
regarding pay, i'd rather be in a situation where my work warrants the $$$, versus having to bargain for everything.

I think it could work for in-house designers, but freelancers would see no joy from it.
I don't really think that a standard rate of pay would work in this industry, even if you put a bottom limit on certain kinds of work it just wouldn't be flexible enough. In this ever changing economy you might need to adjust payrates for certain clients just so that you can work on their projects, would dipping below the standard pay scale be cause to dis-unionize you?
There is no seniority for designers so there is another thing that a union wouldn't be able to help with.
It could help with in-house designers, but it would destroy the mobility and flexibility for freelancers fur sure.

Yeah Seems like it would be hard. It would be good to do something about small companies overworking their designers.
- mr_snuggles0
Designers should realize that that is par for the course when you work with a small company. Growing pains are never easy, but you have to suck it up and deal with it if you want said small company to establish themselves and treat you with respect. Easier said than done I know, I've gone through this shit for the past 6 years so I can only work hard and hope we make it to the next plateau.
