Hello people. I've a little question here. Why do all the newspapers heave there navigation on the left. For example:
Why do'nt they just do it like: http://www.Macromedia.com
I have to redesign a newspaper site and this is my biggest question. Please help. Thanx in advance.

the obvious answer (assuming that users cant be bothered searching for second tier categories) is that they can fit a lot more categories downward, and add and remove categories without having to rejig the nav all the time to fit the width...

one of the best online newspaper features I kow about is at swedish evening paper 'Aftonbladet' if you click a headline you'll come to that article, and if you scroll down the headlines will come again... take a look at http://www.aftonbladet.se/ettor/… klick the first link 'Avgjorde i tiebreak...' and then scroll down and you'll se what i mean!

Another good one is at Aftonbladet's biggest competitor - Expressen's site.
http://www.expressen.se/index.js… I am talking about the 'set text size' function. Click A, B or C.

Btw, the article is about a guy they've named the 'cake-man' on his last day of work he brought a cheese cake to his colleagues. He baked it using alot of cannabis oil and like 10 people had to go to the hospital because of hallucinations. :-)

I worked on online newspapers about 5 years ago and the reasoning then was to ensure an entirely idiot-proof environment for the user - most western people visually scan top/down, left/right so it makes sense to structure content accordingly.
Newspaper companies don't tend to be very imaginative in this area - the delivery of their content and advertising is their prime consideration.
Unfortunately, this approach has drawn online newspapers away from their analogue allure - the ability to flick between pages, scanning content quickly and being caught arbitrarily by articles of interest. One has to to be content with trawling through broad categories, only being drawn to pieces with specifically interesting headers...
But then, you do have the likes of http://www.iht.com/ who get it 'right'!
My apologies for using the term 'analogue allure'. It is a sunday after all.

dutchboy told me about some magazines that he visits where you can take a free tour. that's a pretty smart idea except from the spywares.
