I was just browsing through the site as I always do, and noticing how the good, interesting, useful, surreral or just plain contagious posts get drowned in a sea of nonsense (as I always do). I was thinking what you thought of the idea of having a rating system for posts, where the readers and posters give a 'good or dud' vote or a star system so those with less time can cut to the quality if they so wish. Those who just want to hang around can still do so

i think that only works if you can control votes via auth..
the fast pace of threads and post in NT may not function well with votes, since it has its own natural selection of posts being moved down the second page, where people hardly look.

been suggested before Tiina, but it would be good to be able to sort the threads out a bit... like sperate the "what should I call my dog" threads from the "flash help" and "site crit" threads etc etc....
love your profile picture by the way, twice.

and if something is popular it will be more prominant at the top of PVN anyway.

yeah, i think the current system is pretty ace. I mean... it doesnt take all that much work to sort out what is what...

i like natural selection with QBN patrolling
it would be cool for people here to vote off a thread

tina_g - the best way too keep up with good posts vs. bad posts is to waste all of your time here on NT®. Hitting refresh every 45 seconds.
You'll be on top of all the goings on. ;)

Natural selection eh, I like it - Darwin would be happy that survival of the fittest works for websites too. OK, what if we were to aid evolution by highlighting posts that are highly evolved - i.e. serve their purpose by fully answering a (useful) question or pointing someone in the right direction. Maybe it would kill the organic nature of newstoday, I don't know?

It would be sorta interesting if this PVN column was organized by topic in a folder. So if you open a specific folder then it would look like it is currently, but you could have folders/topics for "Help", "Entertainment", Design", "Rip's", I don't think it's neccessary as I like to see everything at once, but it is a neat idea.

i think we need to see all the resoponses in a row.. so we dont have to press next next next...
- mr_snuggles0
You still could see all the responses in a row...
Even at typophile or many other "design/news" sites you select your forum topic, then all the posts/responses are underneath that one topic. It could easily be designed to fit in this column...

Depending on their coding and whatnot, this could be an option:
An optional checkbox when creating a topic - if it is a technical, flash help, PS, etc type of question, select the box and a small dot or square would appear to the left of the topic title. Nothing too obtrusive, but obvious enough to denote that it is not a typical topic here (we all know what that means).

Abso-f*cking-lutely. There are very few people here that contribute. 100% in agreement with more important post system. I'd say, 80% of posts are non-sense. It's not just quality posts, it's helping people out as well and adding resourceful stuff.
