Okay so I get instructions to upload a print file to a server for a print company and they have a simple password guest/guest right?
is it NORMAL for you to be able to see everyone elses' file on the server (and download at will)? is this common practice for print companies??
because you have GOT to be kidding me if it is.

no that's not normal. frankly i would be quite pissed if other people / companies could download my files. very sloppy done. if you're going to use a simple login at least only use upload rights (still stupid though).

i wouldn't say its normal, it sounds correct for the setup the company is using, but by no means what everyone does, i would call it an oversight or incompetence on the part of the print co.

We make a lot of stuff for big newspapers and such and when we upload pages / ads etc we always see what everyone else is dropping off.
What does it matter anyway? You should only be worried if you're allowed to delete the files with that username.

well, i'd be a bit worried if anyone could download my hi-res originals

sorry, didn't see that you could actually download others' stuff. Well that is, um .. not cool.

Yeah kinda weird. I just downloaded a few files, some nice EPS' of a fairly popular smoothie making company here in Australia... and a few others. Interesting and scary but with my designs I don't particularly care (it's not really a paid job and my brother (who's work it is) doesn't care either).
still it's so wrong... I haven't tried deleting yet. I am not sure that I want to incase you actually can.

oh look at that. I just deleted a file.
how nice!
lucky it's my own file otherwise I think I would be breaching many ethical standards.
so basically... I can download a file, change it, then upload it again with the same filename. and given there are some files here with some big enough brands... that could be so illegal.
geeperscreepers!

ants...
i've seen it where you're company gets access to one folder and that's it (usually named for your company)... which is the way it should be and isn't hard to setup at all. You can usually do it through your hosts control panel...
... but then again... the proofer I use allows all the local magazines to see and adjust each other's files if they wanted too... which wouldn't surprise me if that occured - cuz the magazines here in phoenix are all pretty much shit... and full of jealous shitty people.
I probably didn't need to say that last line... but it felt good to be a prick.
cheers!

still... it's ridiculous.
of course I could tell them to fix it... but that might not work.

i had the same once here in aus - amazing... imagine if you stumbled upon a piece of work that was "meant" to be top secret... interesting.

I'm in Aus too...

back when i was a photographer i used 'easy-transfer' via 'idsn/phoneline'.. some of the newspapers and one in particular had the very same problem. You could do everything with the stuff on their server, edit, delete or download stuff..
i could download a lot of high res press photographs, and they could also d/l mine.
but remember, there's such a thing like a server log, so don't try to mess things up there..

yeah but the userid / pass is the same for everyone. so you can only trace it back based on the ip and most people have dynamic ip's so there you go. not really sound.
it really sounds like incompetence. ants, just write them that everyone is able to delete, or download and edit other people's stuff. which is not cool. the minimum is upload rights only. no download, no delete.

yeah I'm certainly not going to do anything I think is dodgy on the site. noooo way. I certainly wouldn't want anyone to do that to me.
I'll give them a call on monday and let them know.

Aren't there any honest people left in the world or are has the seige against sanity been working overtime and now it's a dog eat dog world? It's the same concept as those fruit and veg stands you get in the countryside, take what you want, leave money for what you take. It's called the honor system and I hope it sticks around. I know it's the intarnet and there are some wackos out there but still.
