myexperiment, I saw your iconics piece at the gallery, good stuff. I really liked the Roy Horn piece, very funny. What term are you?
- Mimio0
I think it's still cheaper to go to Yale.

thanks, and thanks for the tip about sleep depravation, I was hoping that was an exaggeration but my friend that just started says its as crazy as everyone says, yikes!

And you are learning such a great deal of things that you cannot sleep proper hours...and yet Art Center is not churning out the next Paul Rands?
- myExperiment0
i don't believe any school can "churn out" a great designer - it's completely up to the individual to push themself. i am curious though, what schools you believe are transforming people into paul rand.

I never said any school is, I'm just saying if they are working you so hard and teaching you so much you might as well be the next revolutionary...each and every student should be the next Paul Rand. There must be some ultra-secret theories and methodologies that keep you awake at night.

Design and concepts always keep me up @ night. And I didn't go to Art Center.

nobody in college sleeps.

I'm saying that non-designers, and a portion of designers don't know what good deisign is. People are impressed by ArtCenter's image, so they therefore assume the students there do good work. I'll give in and say going to ArtCenter would be better than going to a community or state college, however, the work still sucks. Plus most "ArtCenterians" have this elitist additude like there in some higher caste or something which is really fucking annoying.

How does Art Center rank against other 'top' design schools for graphic design/interactive media/whatever we are calling this?
I'm mainly familiar with Art Center from the Transportation Design side, where it is ranked #1 in the world (or equal first with the Royal College of Art in London depending who you talk to). Art Center and RCA grads dominate the top international car design management positions, end of story. Living on their past reputation, maybe...
But where are they in other fields of design?...

first, people that think design school is only about design concept or aesthetic are ignorant. being a designer as a working professional (not mearly as an 'artist') includes many other things :
-presentation skills
-job profesionalism
-working under deadlines
-working in the clutch
-politics
-business and $ understanding
-working in a teamthose are things most state schools or non-design schools are weak in. and it *really* shows when accd grads go head-to-head with those people in the workforce.
ive seen it time and time again. people with a nice folio get into a company and fold under pressure, or cant present, or have no hand skills, etc.
i could go on ...
