Right, so Mail keeps quitting on me unexpectedly, and I look for some sort of disk tool to control the disk to see why its giving me attitude. I find the disk utility but the "control disk" and "repair disk" buttons are all greyed out.
How do I fix teh broken computer dammit?
Sincerely,

try repairing your permissions.

if repair permissions doesn't help boot and repair disk off the OSX cd or another disk utility cd.. you're probably trying to repair the same disk your OSX system is installed onto, which is not possible.
tip: its always nice to have a 2nd basic OSX system installed onto an external drive with all your utilities, which you can then boot from and repair your main OSX system quickly.

thanks!
The disk utility managed to fix the Mail thing while booting from the CD - but now Safari keeps crashing the moment I open it.

check to make sure you don't have too many fonts open at once.

I don't have any fonts except the standard ones. The computer is one week old (just like my experience with OSX)

my fonts are all wacky in Mail sometimes.. not in the actual message or email, but like where it says From, Subject, Date, To it gets all crazy looks like its encrypted
anybody know what that is caused by?

jox - personally, if i was having problems with core apps like Mail and Safari on a 1 week old machine, i would do a clean install of the whole system and start again from scratch.
unless you've been messing with your home directories and such, these apps should not be crapping out on you.

thanks timg! I was actually thinking that myself. I just deleted safari, im reinstalling it again. If that doesn't solve it - i will reinstall everything.
thanks.

aaand... it didn't help. Now everything works perfectly except Safari. Grr!
I click it, it opens but the little loading circle never stops rotating, then it just disappears and the "unexpected quit... yadda yadda would you like to send to apple" thingy pops up.
Is there anythign else I couild try before I make this thing clean as a whistle?
I owe you one..

have you done all the updates. If you have a week old machine, there's a good chance it might not have the most recent updates.
You should be running os 10.3.5
