would it be illegal to use these words of kenny rogers- "you got to know when to hold 'em"- on a print piece without clearing it with mr. rogers?
anyone know how i can find out? what if i changed the wording a little bit to read, "you've gotta know when to hold 'em"? would that be within legal terms?

if its a spoken word from interview, you need to contact the publisher.
if its part of a song, than you need pay royalty..
if you bump in to him and cursed at you than its all yours

but unless mr rogers didnt copy right the term than you dont need to pay a cent.
unless its used in a movie..
find out which movie and when its IP rights run out

interview can be a tricky thing, most publishers will allow you to use the quote from a third party only if you declear where you got the quote on your work

one more thing..
if its a comment term that he uses all the time than you need make sure that, it was not used in any interview, movie or songs.
you just may need to reference him as speaking it.
BUT one thing you gotta becareful about these terms or phrases are that, the words can be licensed to other already.
