Go with the Video tutorials, they give alot, books are okay too, but not same..

Most 3d apps have the same basics as far as modelling, texturing, etc goes. Even with rendering, both Maya and Max (since version 6) use the same renderer (Mental Ray), so really, all you're learning is the interface, and once you've tried a few, you'll pick your favourite. As far as max stuff online, check out 3dcafe.com, 3dluvr.com and cgtalk.com and look around for max tutorials. But yeah, get a book if you wanna get the basics down. Most of the advanced stuff however, you'll be discovering on your own, as with anything else.

I'll second the 3D Buzz video tuts.
You must not have looked too hard, as Max is the most ubiquitous 3D program out there.

I've checked 3d buzz and the turorial was ok, but I'd rather have more detailed tutorial that could lead me step by step hands on than letting me look for where the buttons are for 5 mins.
I'd much enjoy this tutorial after months later.
anyone recommand more site, book and VTM or DVD..anything..
Thanks

its possible gnomon has a dvd about it.. but they may only deal with maya.

I can see VTC has a lot of contents, but they are kind of dated. 3D Max 4 is their latest though the Max7 is already coming out.
Has anyone had a chance to check out Lynda's tutorial? looks like their Max just came out.
Umm, I'm starting to worry because I don't want to waste too many hours just to look for books or video,,,whatever....
Umm, I just started out with Max 6 tutorial which comes with standard in the Software.
I'm not quite getting it, but at least I know how to use my mouse.

I've been using Max since the DOS days, and am totaly self taught using books, CD's, online tuts...There are heaps of resources out there.

I don't think you've found the video tutorials on 3d Buzz. They are tricky to find and you have to register to download them, but there are tons!
They cover everything from the simple basics, to complex stuff. You won't find anything better without spending hundreds for a DVD.
I'd go through a few, then just look around on CGTalk, or other sites, and start a 'real' project...and finish it.
No better way to learn.

doesn't matter if the VTC is a little outdated, you are just learning the basics to begin with
My brother wanted to learn Photoshop, so i gave him ver. 3.11 even thou i have CS, and it really works out good for him.

thanks a lot.
I agree . It doesn't metter what version I study.I think I'll go with 3D Buzz VT first though it cost me a bit. I think I just have to make it worth my while.
Thanks a lot everyone.
