I did it!! I did it!!
A girl I used to go to school with has a bakery/cafe around the corner from my house. Well she's changing the name and I worked my way in there and told her I was looking to add to my portfolio and get some more experience. Told her I had done ads and in store signage for CompUSA. It sounded good to her and she just wanted some help in the advertising dept. So she wants a sign, biz cards, menu's, tags for her display the whole 9 yards. She's going to need a logo too.
She said she's willing to compensate me, which is really the least of my worries. I've got her new name and a color scheme from her, so I'm gonna work on it from there.
Yee haw!! This is gonna be cool!

Always charge even if you're just starting out and you don't feel that you're worthy. It's better to get paid to learn then doing it for free. Not necessarily about the "money" per say, it's about respect. Even if you charge just a little bit it will make the exchange honest.

Mmmm.... Banana Nut...

Thanks guys! I wonder if I could even maybe get some website building experience from this. I should suggest it.
Now I've gotta get some hand lettering done. I think it'll be the only thing fitting in this case.
Oh yeah and the bakery goodness will be plentiful. They bake everything fresh that morning in the store. They make these killer protein bars and they serve organic coffee. YUM!

very nice, Gilt!
actually those are the nicest jobs to do.. small business (preferrably aimed at comfort/pleasure like cafe's, bars etc.)..carte blache!
These clients are often valueing your work best if they have serious intentions with their biz. Usually you'll see the results instantly as well.. how people react to the menu, style etc.make it sweet & let us know!
goodluck.

Yo Gilt001, I did a biz card and letter head for a friend and charged her £50 thats like $100 us I think and $100 canadien I think, I didn't think it was much to charge someone.

i thought this was about a sideways BJ

set an hourly rate even if its a lower one. If the project goes to shit and you spend a ton of time then you won't feel robbed.
- donal0
yeah me too, but it turned out to be like an episode of friends.
- Gilt0010
that's hilarious toastie.
Nice work chossy, clean presentation too. This is going to be a pretty rustic/organic piece(s). Everything's organic in the bakery, so I'm going to go with that look and feel.
She's real serious too. She wants to be able to change at the start of the year. So I'm looking at short time frame and lotsa work. Good thing I have a great relationship with a local printshop!
