umm how the hell do you save as an older version of illustrator from CS? am i blind?

You can't .
The wonders of CS. Its screwed me before at my old job. You may be able to get lucky copy/paste to an older version, but prob not.

make sure you don't have to edit any text in it before you export. it breaks the text to individual letters upon export to legacy.
