Im going to n'oleans this weekend. Can anyone recommend some cool, on the cheap side places to stay?

when I'm in NO, I always stay the closest to the French Quarter as possible.

You might want to give them some time to clean up the hurricane mess first no?

Thanks, J! Steve, I haven't seen anything to indicate that NO is in shambles. Have you?

My opinion monkeyshine would be to stay in those cute little B&B's.
More of a nice feeling when you wake up than in a corporate run Hilton or some sh*t. Plus, you get to ask people that run it where to go and what to see, etc.
Closer to FQ the better. Just think good food, and you can't go wrong. ;)

thanks, doll! ;)
Im so excited!! Never been there before. I'll definitely stay in or close to French Q.
yay! Hope I remember it. :o

Southern USA is the best part of the USA IMO.

Ok...now you have a special place in my heart for saying that, J.
I love the South.

You could stay in Magnolia Projects for pretty cheap. NOLA, a great place to visit...

new orleans is one of my favorite places.
before i went there a few years ago a friend of mine hooked me up with a map of the french quarter that he had marked up with a lot of personal notes. it was like carrying my own personal tour guide in my pocket.
i have a .pdf version at home. if you're interested, let me know and i'll email it to you this evening.

that sounds great, blaw. Send it on!
It's curious to me that there aren't more design firms there. Seems like with its arts culture and history it would be a haven for creative types. hhmm.

speaking only for myself, i can see my productivity dropping through the floor if i lived there.

i work for a firm and live here, and you're right about one thing - there are a ton of creatives here. Its not the biggest design market though because everyone wants to do their own fine art to advertise or the majority of people are poorer than most cities. The design firm here are Whence, TchopShop, Trumpet, Tom Varisco, New Emit, and a few others.
While you're here, one of the biggest art events of the year is here on Magazine St. and also Julia St. & Camp St., downtown. It's called "Art for Arts Sake," and its 50+ galleries free openings with free food and wine. Great time. Clubs to go to: All of Frenchmen Street, Maple Leaf Bar, Preservation Hall, O'Flaherty's, Mimi's. Skip Harrah's, any mall, city park, and the lake.

Stay at the Hotel De la Poste. It's in the quarter and very nice. You should be able to get it at 90-100 bucks a night.

I hear the Angola Prison is also really a cheap joint. ;)

That's funny you say that about the American South Jazx. New Orleans is about the only city down there I like.
- JazX0
really? I actually like people's attitudes down there and all and the slowed down pace in smaller towns. Real America IMO. I liked NC and SC and parts of Mississippi.

Thanks for the info, mnix. Now I'm ready to move there. :)

The whole time I lived in New Orleans I think i visited the FQ twice. Uptown is where its at (and where the locals are)
Check magazine street, and the garden district, beautifu! Take the ferry over to Algiers point at night for a breathtaking view of the city from across the water.
Eat at Cassamentos on Magazine for the best Oysters you've erer had. Enjoy, and watch your ass.

my studio's site has different shots of city streets every time you visit it, so check it out http://www.whencethestudio.com Give us a call when you get in and we'll let you know where we'll be for the gallery openings.

Check around Esplanade & Decatur. Around Chekpoint ChaCharley's and the Dragon's Den. Right out of the French Market, walking distance from everything.
The Frenchman Orleans has walk in rates of like 60-70$ for nice rooms.
There are many places around there that always have rooms for good prices.
I live not far from NO and go prety often. Maybe we can have some beers and shit.
