Does anyone know why flash plays slower embedded in the browser as oppose to the swf by itself? It's killin muh!

can't say for sure but wouldn't the embedded file be playing through the plugin which in turn is running within the browser application, whereas the standalone swf plays through the flash player app directly. therefore there must be a need for communication between the plugin and the browser in the first instance to allow it's rendering onscreen by the browser. this would create a variable speed change depending on the quality of the browser code that read and rendered 3rd party plugin content. no doubt explorer blows the most. just my 2cents worth.

There are a couple of work-arounds. The most popular is setting the wmode to transparent in the embed and object tags. Google it and you'll find specifics. This will set your flash movie's bg to transparent, so be careful. It does help playback some.
