watching charlie rose the other day he was interviewing a reporter. at a point in the conversation the reporter said his goal was to tell news in a compelling way and rose vehemently agreed... this point of view has been echoed by a few reporters that I've heard and it dawned on me that this is the totally wrong frame of mind to approach news reporting.
reporters should NOT seek to tell news in a compelling way... they should seek compelling news.

I think the implication is that the news they're researching is always compelling, just noone knows it but them.
fo example: The media really gave a shit about Monica Lewinsky, but it took all their writing talent to make the viewers give a shit.

I for one am wondering why the Lacie Petersen murder is such a big story. I mean really, it's tragic and all but that shit happens all the time. Was she some rich guys daughter? probably. Who gives a flying fuck though... If I cared about some biatch up in North Cali getting strangled I'll hit up rotten.com yea know?Tell me something important about my countries foreign policy or something valuable to me as a voter.
Another thing I could care less about is the fuckin weather. They spend a good 5 minutes of airtime on the weather... If they wanted they could run down a weather report in 30 seconds. boom 5 day forecast for local boom 5 day forecast for national.
but alas, huge money interests and corporate advertisers are not interested in educating people on how they manipulate our system of government to their favor... they just want us to pay attention to some bullshit hollywood crap.
