Do any of you manly designer men know anything about these cars? I'm thinking about buying an 89 volvo bertone. You think they're super expensive to fix?
Help a sistah out. :)
- jox0
Er... which model? Bertone = Coupé, not a specific model.
- monkeyshine0
um...right...see? told you I need help. Its a 780.
- jox0
:)
Well, I know some of the story behind the 780. Volvo made this car in partnership with Bertone, which was the first "luxurious" Volvo ever made. Was built between '85 and 1990 (i think) and only 8000 or so made. Came with VERY thirsty engines, at least the 6-cylinder ones.
Make sure to get the straight six 2.9 engine if you want to find parts fairly easily - its the same engine as the Volvo 960 and the rest is - of course - the same as the regular 760.

thanks, jox! :)
Im not sure if its a 6 or 4cly. I would assume its a 6 because from what Ive read 4 cyl. are turbo. Does very thirsty mean its a gas guzzler?
I'm looking at it today. Asking price is $1700. There's some bumper, rear panel damage but interior and engine are supposedly in mint condition.

I don't think there were turbos in the 4 cyls - but if they are i would personally stay away from them. Old turbo cars in general, and old Volvo turbo cars especially usually means trouble one way or the other.
Best thing would be to bring somebody engine-friendly along to help translate all the funny noises, oil colors and whether its been treated well.
After all, if you happen to get bored with it in the future, you could always export to Sweden and earn a buck or two. They're very desired here!
Good luck!

wow, check this out!

(xcept for the interior..ugh)
- jox0
What is the matter with you? Ain'tchoo ever seen a beige, furry interior!? It looks like british toilet seat covers. Te-hee.
- monkeyshine0
wow..thanks for the link. Im getting excited...all depends on how bad the body damage is and if its really in mint shape. Only 125k on it.
- DutchBoy0
it looks all so folded../stuffed in there.. bah..
my father used to be a Volvo-fanatic..
we used to have:
Volvo 244GLE (very luxurious, but in ugly green)
Volvo 240GL
Volvo 740GLEnice cars.
solid. we used to call them 'tanks'.
:)
- DutchBoy0
i'd say go for it if ya can fix it, monkeyshine. you have good taste.
- jox0
Oh yes, they really are tanks! There's hundreds of thousands of them left here in Stockholm even though they're getting so old. And the turn ratio is incredible on 740's. You can actually drive sideways with them. :D
- DutchBoy0
true. i actually used to drive the 740 lots. it was almost my car. he let me be his delivery-boy.. meaning i was driving from media-office to media-office thru-out the country. making thousands of miles..
that car was damn comfy!!
i was never tired driving it. :)

There are tons of volvos in the states too. It seems to be bohemian arty farty chic to drive them.
I'm mostly concerned with safety, reliability...and the luxurious idea of my ass being warmed by heated seats in the cold of winter.
- DutchBoy0
but as you are of the female gender, i'd rather propose this Volvo (if ever it'll be taken into production!):

I've been driving a '89 240DL for 4 years, 215,000 miles on it and its still running strong. It's definelty a tank and cheap on the gas too. I love my Volvo.

how can you not like one?
they never seem to die.

thanks for the response on this guys. I LOVE the chick volvo. Jox is gonna buy it for me. He said he would. ;)
I looked at the car and its a peach...EXCEPT that the back right wing and right bumper have a big ole dent. It is slightly caved in so that the trunk isn't quite aligned. The guy currently has it taped up to keep moisture out. Seems like if I didn't fix that the trunk would collect moisture.
It has a 4 cyl turbo engine (engine is a newer 91 engine with maybe 110k miles).
Other than the damage that would be no big deal if it didn't affect the trunk, its in amazing condition. Whattya think? He's asking $1,700 for it. Wonder if I could get it for $1,200. Think it would cost tons to fix trunk?
