On Oct. 15 Ramadan begins. I thought thats what you meant.
That is where Muslims don't eat, drink (not even water), chew gum, take medicine.. etc. from Sunrise to Sunset.

What does this holiday commemorate?

i like yom kippur becuase it is not like you are forgiven for your sins. People think this but its not true. You are not wiped clean of sins, rather the hope if that you think about your sins and fast. Then, hopefully, you will learn to attribute the empty feeling inside with thinking about your sins.
I fast. I like it more for psychological reasons than religious.

all this restristictions and rules from religions - I don't believe in it.

but my family does and that is why I do it.
