Does anybody know how this was made? Is the "smoky"effect made with some type of filter, plug-in?
I need an expert's help with this~ hehe =)

could be a plug-in and it could be a good hand with brushes

It appears to be the Particle Playground from After Effects Pro Bundle, played in reverse.

just use stencils, sand and a straw - blow out your sand while recording it and reverse the playback and add some animations
no?

looks like it could have been the finger tool in PS as stated above, but that would have taken some serious frame by frame time.

Hey all. Thanks for all the great comments on the piece, it's so great to work so many hours on something and have it pay off. Your opinion means a lot to me.
So basically I didn't use any plug-ins or anything to get that effect. I wanted something super realistic so we printed the designs out on accetate and while the ink was still wet we layed it in a tray and dissolved it with rubbing alchohol.
Then all the footage is time ramped and animated. It took a lot of trial and error to get the effect we wanted, but in the short time frame we had I like the result. So it's a little more than the "finger tool" in photoshop, and not quite a stencil, sand and a straw. heh

there's a very interesting tutorial to 'smoke out' a layer in AE. I once used for one conitining text.
try creativecow.
don't forget that AE is in some part,m photoshop with a timeline. And by adding a certain parameter in the time function you can achieve that non linear fps.

You could definitely achieve this effect many different ways. Especially partical stystems.
In this case the piece was almost 5min long and that render would be way too much for my little g4, heh.
