For those of you who are familiar with the interview process or just programming in general. What are some questions you would ask to gain confidence that someone is familiar with the .net platform, ASP etc... or would have the potential to grow as programmer fairly quickly. I'm interviewing programmers for a project coming up and I feel a bit awkward since I don't have slightest clue (other than a very surface understanding) about programming.

If anyone can answer this question from a PHP perspective, I too would also appreciate it!

as a programmer, who knows php and asp, i would have to say that in six interviews i have never been asked a 'straight' programming question. no one says 'so how would you build an array in php?'. you should know by the cv and previous work whether this guy/gal knows how to program. get the person to bring up a url of a recent application that he/she has built and ask them to take you through it. you'll soon know - whether you yourself can program or not - whether you are listening to bullshit or not. that's what i've always had to do, and my record - for programming jobs - is 6 job offers from 6 interviews.

I appreciate the reponse DC. It makes total sense what you said and I had planned to ask for examples but I have a few resumes where the person has only worked Inhouse and many times not able to really run me through any thorough demonstrations. I guess I was mainly looking to find ways to spot the Bullshit. Also I know .net is fairly new so many don't have many working examples.
