Internships

I know how the folks here frown upon unpaid internships. But my boss just told me that they would buy a computer/software for an intern if I wanted to do that...but no pay. Now first you have to understand the Las Vegas design community as a whole, sucks. I would love to teach and help develop various designers here in hopes that he/she could one day make something of himself/herself. Plus being that the Hard Rock Hotel has a very liberal style with design it is by far the best hotel to work as a inhouse designer.
I would make sure that if they stand firm on not paying, then the focus would be more of a three month time limit. So as not to be 'using' someone and to keep the focus on getting some experience for younger designers. Not to mention they would have access to concerts and other events..
thoughts? Dont hate on me either, I've been witness to other 'Intern' threads. The fact is there are sometimes opportunities like this, so help me think up ideas to make unpaid internships more paletable to all.

sir! i say, sir!
i'll be in at 6:30 with my own workstation, a fresh pot of coffee and a box of donuts.

sure sounds good! since we wont have an extra computer by then, just stop by my house, I'll give you my room key and you can just use mine :)
but seriously, if I do this I really want it to be a good experience for everyone. If it's unpaid then I really need to figure out other ways to compensate some young pup. Oh an idea, if I show him/her the ways of NT, then that might be payment in full...

yeah, seriously... it sounds like it might be a good opportunity for the right person.. you just have to make sure they're young, eager to learn and get their foot in the door.

also, make sure that the tasks they are given will promote that same growth and eagerness to learn.
nothing worse than being a bitch and not getting paid for it

yeah for sure, this is how the whole thing came up is that I feel like I only design about 20% of the time...we get a lot of requests for specific photos/logos from other media outlets as well as having to chase down info for each job. So I think if we got an intern the only thing shitty I would have them do is the photo requests, other then that they would do the same as myself but under supervision. So in the end they should have some killer stuff for the portfolio and a better grasp on the way things work in the real world.

word.
and if your candidate rocks it - you can always slip em some cizash under the table
(unless of course they're glass tables) then you should probably do it outside of the work environment... or just buy em beers after work!

The internship that got me the job I'm at now was unpaid. But at that internship I got to work on catalogs and other large documents. The studio I got hired at was looking for someone that could work on catalogs as well as simple ads, brochures, etc. Most of the other people applying didn't have catalog experience.
I think as long as you are doing something for them that will actually help them get a paying job and/or increase and refine their abilities, it's up to them to decide if it's worth it.

just lavish them with compliments every day -- ask them their opinion on design -- tell 'em how sexy they look -- that they're the best ass you've ever bent over.
seriously though - just find a richie student.

salisae, have i told you lately that you're sexy?

ha! Yeah for sure, I'm all about helping folks.
