I have been there, just off the coast of Tanazania and it's fucking lovely, you will smell fresh, natural vanilla and cloves when coming close to the island. http://www.zanzibar.net/

You gonna' love it. Nice mix of both African and Arab delites (food and women). Watch out for swindlers though. Knowing a bit of Swahili doesn't hurt, but English will suffice. Spent a month there in '99.

nice... we're spending a few days in Dar Es Salaam, then heading inland to a national park, then zanzibar for a week - only thing is we're there in november so could be rainy...

good enough, it's kinda' crazy to think about but years ago when the Deutschers were in there, they spoke a Creole language fused with German, Arabic, African and English. You can still hear it in their dialects. Kinda of an odd place Tanzania was but at that time was the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Have fun. The food is outstanding.

2 tips from what i can remember from going there in 2001. Dar es Salam is a dangerous piece of shit city. Do NOT wander around after dark. Once it gets dark people on the street vanish and it will only be your rich outatown ass wandering around lost. that means you = TARGET. I hitchiked from Niarobi to Victoria Falls and Dar was by far the dodgiest place i went. Fine if you stay in some luxury compound but be wary if you aint. 2 get your cash before you get to Zanaibar. Get american dollars cause the dont take tanzanian money there , or they didnt then. you have to buy yankee bucks at hotels or from dodgy white fuckers on the street or rich german businessmen who all will rip you off. other than that the food is amazing the people fantastic the water warm and you will have a wonerfull time. just be carefull in dar, really.
