fireworks question

i try to use the paintbucket tool on a new fireworks file, cant use it! what gives?! some option im missing to uncheck? it's like photoshop but not...please help if you can, thanks!

fireworks has two modes, bitmap and vector.
by default you are in vector mode. to get into bitmap mode select an object and double-click it.
to get out hit the little stop sign looking button along the bottom of your canvas.

i am in bitmap mode and it still wont let me paintbucket the background. just gives me the little circle with a line through it saying, emphatically, NO!

you can only use the paintbucket on the sected object, and that object must be a bitmap. if it's vector, go modify > flatten selection, then try it.
if you're just changing the background color why not use modify > canvas > canvas color.

i like fireworks a lot and do all of my interface designs in it.
it's pretty intuitive once you get rolling in it.
