when people think of famous celebrity families, there's a whole litany of obvious examples: the baldwin's, the jackson's, the kennedy's, the barrymore's, even charlie and eddie murphy. and yet i'm always amazed that people forget the accomplishments of the gumbel brothers: bryant, greg, ricky, bobby and tito. who else has revolutionized the "ethnic hair care products" aisle at long's and walmart stores across the states? who inspired eddie murphy's character in coming to america, the preacher who sang whitney houston's the greatest love of all?
everytime you see a shiny red philadelphia 76ers starter coat with a layer of grease along the neckline, whenver you see christopher atkins from blue lagoon or the greatest american hero or welcome back kotter's natural fruits and berries perm, remember to give a shot out to greg gumbel himself, cbs announcer, and true playa of the new millenium...
p.s. as a sidenote, did you know that leroy johnson from the 80's series Fame turned out to be an erotic dancer in amsterdam? i was amazed to discover this. it's such a tragedy to waste all that electric talent and dynacism...

people use the word "G" all the time, like"What up G?" but nobody really knows that the term originated out of respect to greg gumbel after his chilling performance in the 1987 final four between indiana and syracuse. g is short for gumbel, and of course, og is really "original gumbel"
