I was just told in a macstore that the recent iBook does have the ability for DualScreen - with a patch - but that the graphics processor is not powerful enough.
The colors would be more pale on the 2nd screen.Anyone experienced that?

I don't know for sure - but it would seem odd that the new ibook wouldn't be able to handle it seeing as I used video edit on an old pre - G3 powerPC (probably about 300mhz) on dual monitors back in 1998 and it worked fine!
but as I said, I don't know about these new fangled machines

the pale colours thing sounds like bs to me
here's a helpful page about running dual screens without mirroring on an ibook

I've had a iBook G3 for about 2 years now. I bought it off a mac store in Toronto and from day one it's been running dual display. I've never looked to see if it was hacked before I bought it, but it came straight from a brand new box so I doubt it.
I don't notice pale colours at all.

I think the *official* mac line is to upsell you on a powerbook if you want "professional" features like dual display. what bs. the secret is...you can do it all on an ibook just fine. come to think of it, you can probably do it all on an old wallstreet G3 just fine. just a little slower. but then, is speed worth 2-3Gs to you?

thats what I thought, too.
"Yeah, the iBook is fine, but all the cool boys play with the Powerbook.."
hmmm...

i had an ibook for a while and used the screen spanning hack. their line about it being pale is a bunch of bs.. at least you'd think they'd be smart enough to not feed you that line and say something like, the firmware might cause instability or something... yeah, it works just great

I'm running an iBook G4 with iBook Screen Enhancer enabled and it works wonderfully. The colors on my CRT arre great. If you have 32MB VRAM each monitor gets 16, then if a game needs all 32 one monitor shuts off. If you have 64MB VRAM same idea follows, it splits it. I love having this option, if I couldn't do this I would have gotten the PBG4 12"
