Our client gave us some really shitty footage with our talent moving on a white background. I need to take the footage and key out the background and fil the talent with a solid color. A perfect example would be the black figures on the color backgrounds in the iPod Commercials. Does anyone have any clever ways of getting this effect besides the obvious keying out the background. Also anyone know of any clever was of keeping the edges fluid and smooth. Thanks for any help!

it's called a silhouette... I think he was using apple as an example?

Yeah, I'm using it as an example because I know EVERYONE has seen.

a long workaround but...
you could import the footage into flash and use trace bitmap on each frame...delete the white background and then fill the talent with whatever...
flash's vectors should give clean-ish edges depending on the level of detail you set
depends how much time and patience you have

Does seem labor intensive, but what isn't if you wnat it to look good? Thanks!

I would suggest trying a color difference matte and a matte choke with a bit of edge smothing (After Effects can acomplish this easily). Then use the result as a matte which you fill with a solid, and setup your background. Viola! Instant iPod ripoff.
... then if the client bitches about color bleed or edge problems tell them to shoot on a green or blue screen next time and explain why. Then sock 'em with extra billable hours biatch!!
