use the finder. under go > connect to server > ftp://yourserver.address
you can mount the server on your desktop and drag and drop like a normal hard disk.

----------------doh! why did i never think of that. i used to call support and spell out the one's and zero's i needed to transfer..

Hey, I didn't know that! Doesn't seem to work too well for me, though. I just see a pair of empty folders and the boilerplate message file. :\
Oh well.

Finders Built-in FTP Client can only download & cannot upload
transmit is not free, but it is the best FTP App for mac. it is only $25 and well worth it
cyberduck looks promising

I like CyberDuck quite a bit. It's undergone a good, solid update recently and so far I would recommend it. My biggest issue with Transmit (having not paid for it) is it not remembering my FTP details.

welded ,
*Cough* serial box *Cough*
did i say that out loud, forgive me

"...having not paid for it..." *could* be interpreted a couple of ways. Not to say that it should, but it could. :)
Here's a lozenge.

And dont forget Interarchy...not free, but does FTP, SFTP and some things the others can't, like fairly advanced handling of SFTP, mirror synchronization, scheduled operations, and a simple approach to auto upload a file/folder to the same location in remote directory strucure.
