what do you think is the best gadget to record lectures at the university, so I can listen to them on my PC or mp3 player?
mp3 player (which one?) vs. minidisc ...
is an ipod with a microphone any good? how close will the mic have to be to the lecturer?

Pay a little extra and get the one with mic input. A disc is much cheaper than a memory card if you run out of space and if you intend to use the audio for production it will be high quality.
I have also had experience with sony voice recorders with mic inputs and have been happy with the result and ease of upload, but the quality is not comparible with MD.
