"There was no lack of episodes both from the events themselves as well as the medal giving ceremony for the 200m race, where African American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos (first and third place), lowered their heads and raised their fists in a “Black Panther” salute. In this way, they wished to protest against racism in America. This was not appreciated by those responsible for the American delegation and both athletes were deported immediately.
