Anyone here buy stocks online? Do you know any sites where you can start by buying a small amount?

what kind of thing are you looking for heavy? I design stock UI websites for most of the big financials

I'm looking at Etrade, Ameritrade and Scottrade at the moment. I'm basically just looking for one that doesn't cost 1000's to open an account. The only one I can find much info on is Scottrade which says you can open an account with $500. Any opinions from anyone who has used these services would be helpful.

do you realize what you've done!!!
.. Wait!!!!
..................You'll have to excuse my friend here he's a little slow...........The town, is back that way...
Heavy... you meant buying & trading stock investments right?
- jevad0
scottrade wins a lot of awards but christ knows why because the usability on their website is ATROCIOUS. YOu're right though - you can trade very low volumes with them and thats why they are popular.
Ameritrade you are looking at about a $2,000 minimum opening balance.
Etrade has a minimum of $1,000 for cash accounts; $2,000 for margin accounts.
I'd recommend etrade over scottrade if you can afford it

Do you see Etrade as having financial benefits over Scottrade or from a usability standpoint?

its a better service all round...it costs a little bit more..both in min investments and trade%...but the experience, I think you'll find, will be far superior.
best thing to do is call and talk to a new account person at both and ask as many questions as possible.

Thanks a lot for the excellent info BTW.

if you had a whackload of cash I'd recommend schwab or the new tdwaterhouse because they are both mint!

hey jevad, you reckon you could email me some links to stuff you've done for financials, I have some freelance next week for something I believe is along those lines, it would be great to be able to rip you off heheh ;)

ah d00d I wish I could but I would probably get fired if I did - no-disclosure agreements and all that

I have a lot of different shares all over the board. I use eTrade.com very good. Have insider info from a broker friend of mine in NYC. But my stocks like everyone elses took a nosedive. Got a bunch of Macromedia and had Sonic Foundry which switched over to Sony, so I made a little money. Actually bought a bunch of Enron when they went out and came back, that'll be worth something in twenty years if they come back.

BAH! - you skate peoples pools but ya cant email links, call yourself a punk, punk?!
heh, no worries :)

tdwaterhouse is quite good, jevad speaks the gospel
- jevad0
its about to get much better
- heavyarms0
Are you allowed to post examples of your work in a portfolio Jevad?

I use my "local" brokers one. It's pretty sucky in terms of functionality and UI but you can't beat their commission.

I can honestly say without trying to brag about it, over the past 10 years since I dumped about 5K on the market, I've turned that into 23K, even after the 9/11 thing. Hopefully, that 23K will sprout even moreso. I'm thinking about switching to tdwaterhouse from eTrade.
