there was some way of offseting and copying and object so that you could just press a combination of keys and the pattern would replicate itself.
any idea what im talk about? like say you had a rectangle, with this trick im talking about, you would keep making rectangles 5pts to the right of the preceding one over and over...

There's a repeat transformation command. I forget the key combo, but it's right in the transform menu. Combine it with cmnd-F and that should do it.

On a mac:
drag copy your object (shift+option+drag)then (apple+D) to step and repeat

Yeah thats just when you go to Object > Transform > Move and copy an object.
Then you can use cmd + d to repeat the same trasnformation.
You can always hold alt and duplicate an object and position it that way, and use cmd + d to repeat the transformation.
Hope this helps.

select object
hold down option key
press arrow key in the direction you want to repeat in.

actually since this is here, I have a question too. Seems when I use the 3D options for fonts, it always offsets it so it doesn't sit on a straight line at 90 degrees so-to-speak. Anyway of fixing this, it's weird.

you can also try this:
1. select the object(s) you want to offset or duplicate
2. double click on the 'selection' tool and a 'move' window should appear and give you the options that i believe you are looking for.
