I still use dial-up at home. And the internet is coming to mobile devices which also have slow connections.
I still design for 800x600 too - because there are more people out there using this equiment than you'd like to think.

yeh, ok, but what about film sites and game sites? what's the point of compressing video right down so it's only just viewable on 56k?

you're right about 800x600 though

well if your target is to produce a gaming site then great...
If the bbc went flash I'm sure we'd all agree it would be a disaster... it's knowing where the line is I guess.

i doubt an information portal like the bbc would even think of it moth.

Well there is a reason most game and video sites offer high and low bandwidth versions of videos.
It completely depends on the target. If you're an agency trying to impress your clients and colleagues go all out and do so. However if you're amazon or a huge e-commerce site simplicity and usability should be the highest of concerns.

why do you have a pic of a lady in a wheelchair on your site normal?

of course i know the bbc wouldn't do that... but that's my point. It's not dialup vs broadband, better or worse, but what's good for getting the job done.

my advice would be create what you feel comfortable, get your style down, then expand on that.
Wheather it requires broadband or dialup depends on the project at hand. Like I said keep it in mind, but dont limit your creativity to one or the other. Once your have your signature, style, then you can learn what works best for your project.
