Possible to do on a 1st gen old iMac? With OS9? For free?

i have it installed on a 1st edition blue & white 450mthz tower. almost a half gig of ram. its ok with a few apps open like photoshop 7 (would not run cs on it). Apple & new software have requirements on them. you can run them.. lets say, but slower than expected.
it all depends on the amount of ram you have.
basically now that i have a dual 2giga g5, working with os 10.3 on a g3 seems like im constipated without nothing to read

i installed panther on my 1st gen 333 imac. it has a whole 160 megs o ram. it works fine for internet and simple web art. but i wouldnt dare work on print files with it. prolly blow up! hehe

So, did you purchase OSX then? I'm just trying to help out a friend with an old CPU. No print design or anything like that. He just like the interface of X. He's got 160 MB RAM.

If he's not arsed about speed then defo go for it. with 160Mg Ram he will only be able to do basic operation safely (Safari, Mail, Finder). Will need more Ram to use any version of PhotoShop, Flash, Illustrator etc.
