no more graphical ads and no reactivation every 30 days needed. If it wasn't for google getting into email online mail would still suck... thanks to them hotmail will/might be good in september.

this dated article claims hotmail has about 110 million users/accounts!!
http://news.com.com/2100-1023-86…
let's simply assume 100 million x 2 gigabyte..
that's well over 200 petabyte then, omg!
or 200,000 terabyte..
200,000,000 gigabyte..
200,000,000,000 megabyte..
err...

it's up and going now. i have it on mine. i've been paying for the 10mb for about 3 years, then one day it was 2000MB, pretty damn cool. i just use now for clients to email me large crap, works well.

110 million user accounts doesn't mean 110 million active users, and even if it did I does not mean each will use 2gigs each. There's no way Microsoft will set aside such a huge amount of storage just in case every single user that's ever signed up suddenly wants to back up their hard drive 20mb at a time.
It's just a marketing ploy.
- auricom0
well it's only for people who pay the 19.95 a year. regular free accounts are like 10 or 20 MB.
- ribit0
Just because they wont need to actually set aside 2GB for everyone doesnt make it just a marketing ploy...it's just real usage patterns. Now if everyone DID fill up their 2GB, they would have to provide the space...
...besides the price/GB for storage is so low now (approaching zero), it's almost not an issue for any decent sized company.

i just can't justify paying for hotmail.
With hosting being so cheap but still getting a good sized space it doesn't take much to create a client area for them to upload/download files without the worry of "is my mialbox big enough?"
- ribit0
Do we pay for Hotmail?
Even with your own webspace, theres lots of uses for 2GB of online storage, and the Hotmail system being based on IMAP makes it far more usable than GMail, as you can mass-move mail from or to mail accounts on other services using any IMAP client ike Outlook or Entourage (useful for backing up years of mail and big attachments)

whattabout 250MB for normal accounts?
Still with the same 2MB...
- ribit0
its a slow rollout...

hotmail and gmail are a waste of space...
Hotmail is spam bomber city- for every 3 wanted emails you get you then get 30 spams...
Gmail is for trendsters... it's not IMAP so it is virutally useless for comtrolling large data.

I agree with the web host theory- you can get a host with email forwarding and back up plus the ability to run a website- your OWN email name notfor less money than the paid hotmail dilly-
I use hotmial for one reason only- as my sign up email for stupid places that force you to register to view their site. Today's in box "112 emails" total number that matters to me "2"

$20 a year for 2GB of space, my host doesn't come near that.
I honestly don't get that much spam and you can setup email forwading from one of your servers email to go to the hotmail.
If you don't recieve large files then it may not be worth it, but for people who get large files from clients....this service is perfect.
