use soul seek. check out remember shakti (fusion band with ex miles davis guitarist john mchughlain sp? and zakhir hussain, wiz on the tabla
im not to familiar with the musical structure though, but its rather complex

na ma, ravi and shakti are, like man said, "fusion" bands. Indian music for western tastes.
For proper folk music from that place search this guy called Nusrath Fateh Ali Khan (think that's how it's spelt).

yeah nusrat is sick, one of the best voices ever...and there is nothing wrong with fusion bands if they're doing it right, no one can phuck with zakhir on the tabla, and the sound is like its being played to jazz. anandar shankar is another wicked dude on sitar.

ravi shankar and zakir hussain are gods in india too kuz
nusrat fateh ali khan's voice is unbelievable (he's from pakistan not india), but he's also very well known in the west i would have thought. is sony records an indication of western appeal?

if y'all want to hear something different:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obido…
its a tribute to nusrat done by the asian underground scene in the late 90s. they remixed his vocals to their instrumentals. the asian dub foundation track is a gem.

my boyfriend's mate left a huge collection round ours of bhangra 7 inches from the early 80s in London when it was just starting up - the covers alone are awesome!

Incredible performers and the music is beautiful. The Musicians of the Nile
They're from Egypt but I think you might like to listen to them if you're into that kind of music.

hey guyz, i'm impressed with your knowledge.
didn't think shankar was that big in india and i didn't think fat ali khan was well known in the west. Signing for sony indication of western appeal? nah, big enough home market for him to be worth signing for sony anyway. Pakistan/india same difference.

not exactly on topic, but following bit's post, this is a truly remarkable musical legacy:

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (this is how its spelt) was one of the greatest voices of our time... unfortunately he died coz of liver failure... pakistanis LOVE him like crazy...
listen to tracks like "MERA PIYA GHAR AYA", "DUM MAST KALANDAR", and the soundtrack of Dead Man Walking....amazing stuff...
in highschool, my chemistry teacher used to borrow cds of Nusrat from me...
it is said that he died so soon... RIP

- zedvox0

my family would freak out if i were to date a muslim.
and there is a girl with whom romance is not in the picture cuz she is muslim and she would probably get disowned if she were to date me + i am not muslim...worse i am un religious.wooohoooo go india/pakistan!

if y'all ever get a chance to see Zakhir, do it man. I saw him twice, its like his fingers dont even touch the tabla...his improv is sick, you can totally hear the melody in the beats, he's so dynamic with that thing.
