Hey aka,
Depends what you want to do.
The best place to start:
http://newyork.craigslist.org/
pick a category and check it every day for a week. That will give you a good indication of what's up.
Also - Monster, Hot Jobs, Filcro Media, Career Builder, etc.. -
Believe it or not, there's quite a bit going on in New York right now, just be realistic (you're competing with a LOT of people), be prepared to spend a lot of money (it ain't cheap) and be prepared to compete and push yourself as hard as you can.
Nobody gives anyone a free ride here. But ultimately, I think you'll find it's worth it.
Good Luck - and if you need anything else NYC related - just contact me.
Although - why in the hell would you want to leave an awesome city like Melbourne?

Oh yeah - one more thing. Anyone looking to move to NYC should check out this site:
Not only is it a good read but it's sidebar links are among the most comprehesive I've seen.
If you really want a flavour of what's up here in NYC - bookmark them all.
Enjoy.

NY is great. For design, let's say graphic design, not fashion, not advertising, but graphic design...it's ok. Better go to london!
Small good shops in NY tend to be arrogant, kiss their feet and you might be offered something. ..
Not kidding.

thanks olli and lara! I've already lived and worked in London, and although I do love Melbourne, I want to get out and live in a few more places before I "settle down" so to speak. I visited NY for about a week back in 2000 when i was living in London and fell in love with the place. Rokin' city.
Thanks for your help guys, gives me something to go on anyway.
