Sh*t!
I was backing up late last night onto my external Lacie disc. My computer (Mac 17" Powerbook) crashed on me.
Now my Lacie isn't mounting the desktop (oooer!) anymore. The system profile can see the disc, but I can't access it.
What do I do? I've tried reinstalling the drivers from lacie.com and they seemed to load on the external disc fine (weird). Still can't see it on the desktop tho.
Help. I'm a frteelancer and there's a lot o'stuff on there.
Cheers,
Desperate Dan.

I hate doing it but...

I had the same happen to me, try to restart with the extenal not connected, then plug it in to see if it connects.
Mine did the same but sorry to say the external was damaged as the extenal was unable to read the first line on the actual disk - lacie said sorry and gave me a replacement but didn't recover my files.
which was nice - not!

:oS
Yeah, I have this dark sinking feeling that the disk is dead...
I hate machines. They have no reasoning skills.

its not really a backup drive if its the only copy of your files... is it
- whatfont0
is it making a noise like it is trying to read something?
I also have this problem sometimes when I connect an external dvd drive as the icon disapears and then reapears when I unplug the DVD.

i had the same problem. try installing it on a different machine then recover the files.
I lost all my files, now i backup my backup

so do I after that, really fucked me off considering I got it to back up on.
and of course deleted some files that I later needed. doh!

toe-knee:
Nah, I usually have roughly synced copies on my laptop, lacie and DVD. Only the lappy is playing up and I was preparing to clena reinstall Panther. I'm gonna take it round my mates PC tomorrow. Last ditch...whatfont: yes, it seems to work fine when my lappy boots up. It just fails to mount.

sounds like the same that happened to me, the disk just kept trying to read the first track and couldn't so had nowhere to start and just kept spinning.
hopefully it might be a software issue and you friend can help.

Thanks whatfont (et al).
Looks like it just one of them things we learn from...
...the hard way.
As usual...
...*gripe.

This has happened to me before.
First thing turn everything off, turn it back on. If you can hear the drives "spin" as it starts, that's a good sign.
Go into Apps-Utilities-Disk Utility and open...look to see if it sees your firewire drive. if it does try to mount, if it won't mount try to repair the disk. Try mounting again. If that doesn't work, try booting into 9 to retrieve the files, I had to do this once and it saved my tookus from recapturing a shit load of video.
Try those and see if it works.
Also not to be silly but make sure the firewire is all the way in, it's the simple stuff we miss first.

Is it just not appearing on the desktop, or not appearing in the Finder sidebar too? (I had a Lacie firewire disk working fine apart from not being visible on the desktop)
Does it show as unmounted or mounted in Disk Utility? Does it fail to mount when you hit 'Mount' in Disk Utility?
