Can someone tell me a good definition and meaning behind what PostScript actually is?

PostScript is a programming or page description language ... it is a way of describing what a page should look like

it is also what your printer uses when engaging a RIP (raster image processor) to "translate" digital docs into a raster image that a printer can print ... it is also handily device-independent, so any Postscript printers should print shit the same way
