hey guys
i need to design a software box....nothing real...just a graphic that looks like one.....
you'll see them on macromedias site...etc.
anyone got ideas on *how* do do it?
everytime I design the front and then try to transform it to the shape/perspective all the type looks like shit.
the text is unreadable etc.
the best looking covers i've seen are: www.killercovers.com
not that they look the best, but quality of them is good...the text is readable etc.
anyone got ideas?

Have you thought about printing them out and then photogrpahing them? Actually making a cover and mocking it up around an existing software box that you have?
The other thing would be to actually map you graphics onto a box modelled in 3DS maxmor some such application

Isnt this real easy these days in Illustrator/InDesign/Quark?

All you need is AI and PSD. DEsign it about twice the size you'll need the final to be. Get it all rasterized, then create the perspective. Might want to use one of the macromedia graphics as a template for the skewing. Then throw on subtle lighting effects and cast shadow and you're in business. I can bang one out for you in half an hour if you give me the flat design.

You could do it in 5mins in a 3D program. Thats the only way to get proper lighting and surfacing.

agreed - 3D is the only way to get professional looking results.

I would start by finding a template for a box at some print companies website, download the .eps/ai version of it and start designing away? What's not to understand?
