anyone know of a wi-fi sniffer that can find hotspots, and determine if they're open (ie not wep enabled)?
can they determine if they're a pay service or free open hotspot?
i heard about the kensington's WiFi Finder...
http://www.kensington.com/html/3…but i've read bad reviews.
i run a web site: http://bayareafreefi.com and would love the ability to check on locations or find new ones easily.

you can just walk around with a laptop i guess, witha sniffer running on it. or get a wifi palmpilo.t

Check out network stumbler. It rocks. just google it.

i use stumbler on OS X. i wish it could better graph signal strength though.
trouble is i have to open my laptop every time i want to check.

hmmm i didn't know about that one.

Use KisMac of you're running OSX. It'll even crack WEP encryption. And if you have a USB GPS unit, you can plug it in and it'll map out your found hotspots.

wow, glit, i'd like to hear more about mapping the spots on OS X. interesting. i'm not so into hacking, but if kismac is better than stumbler, i'm game.

also, just announced...
http://www.marware.com/WiFySpy.h…
but still doesn't determine wep protected or free.

Now that kicks Stumbler's tail!
Wow! Makes me want to buy a GPS device! Incredible!
Glit you have GPS? any suggestions?

i'll sniff your wi-fi for you
ooooh baby

I don't have a GPS. It is tempting though. Open source software KICKS ASS!!! Especially on a MAC!!!
Yeehaw!!

and what about the hacking ability? where does that come in? i'd sure like to be able to have access at some of my favorite cafes that have offices nearby that are wep enabled!

Crap, if I had my iBook with me right now I'd tell ya. I know it'll crap WEP. Maybe if you just tell it you want to use that Network it'll do it for you. Can't remember off the top o' the ol noggin'.
