I live in the states and would like this phone : http://www.siemens-mobile.com/cd… but I do not understand the unlocked and locked idea or the Sim free. Am I able to use this in the states?

future ref for anyone who wants to know: http://www.german-way.com/german…

some phones are locked to the sim card of a particular carrier, these locks can be removed, but this is generally not something you can do yourself w/o proper hardware/software. there are plenty of people who will do it for you for a moderate charge 15-20$

I am glad you just told me that. How should I go about finding this information out about the carriers?
- chortik0
how do you plan on getting this phone in the first place? i haven't heard of any US carriers supplying it and nothing regarding them getting it in the near future. if you get it on ebay from europe, it's likely to already be unlocked (sim free).
one thing to keep in mind though is that not all foreign phones work on US gsm frequencies.
having said that; this one should be just fine

T-Mobile phones are all unlocked. I think

I hadn't thought about the purchase yet but I am sure through Newstoday someone might be able to buy it for me if i was unable to locate it anywhere online that will ship here.
- chortik0
FYI, US gsm frequencies are 1900 and 800/850

great chortik! so in otherwords all I have to do when choosing a phone is make sure the frq are within that range?
- chortik0
yes.
check ebay auction 5707918772 and be prepared to pay through the nose

Hmm. Ok. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI…
not too bad. how sure are you that it will work in the states? should i check with tmobile first you think?
- chortik0
i doubt tmobile will want to help you.
this phone was approved by the fcc

"i doubt tmobile will want to help you" that is what I do not understand. Why not? I am giving them service. Don't they make more money on service than hardware? Why wouldn't they want to help?
- chortik0
because they are bastards, they've done nothing but screw me, so i left after the number portability thing went into affect.
at some point one of thier reps asked me if i would like to cancel my account...
- Spobo0
omg that sucks. tmobile?
- sneeth0
t-mobile will not want to help you, they do make money off the hardware as well, but on the other hand it doesnt really matter. as long as the phone has the same gsm frquencies you just slap in your simcard and it is fine. at my work my boss always brings new siemans phones back from germany and we use them in canada on fido with no problems. they may contact you for the esn number on the back of your phone though

what i found that if you want to get a new phone that is available through one of the carriers, do it via amazon.
amazon has the v600 for 100$ cingular sells it for 250, att for 150, i think
- Spobo0
that is a really good point.

let's assume i have the phone. i replace the card and it works fine under tmobile. I then go to germany. turn my phone on. will it rome? will it have service?
- chortik0
if you ask tmobile to turn on internaltion roaming, it will roam, i roamed in india, israel, uk and france w/o a problem, it's just damn expensive to make calls
