I have a Sony VX2000 and am totally happy with it. But if I had to buy one today, I'd go for this puppy:

the Canon ZR series are really good cameras. Lots of video control. I've had one for a couple of years, banged it around and it's holding up like a champ.

only MiniDV ive used is a sony, it was all right, you could control the light/effects but it's more of a camera that everyone could use.
i found the quality good though, but any MiniDV will be pretty decent quality for what it is.
id go for something small that you can carry along with you all the time and not have it be in the way/cumbersome.
