designer portfolio sites
do u prefer very plain simple text sites that focus on the work itself
or sites that actually have a lot going on as well as the work on show
?
- jevad0
KISS!!
- blackspade0
agreed
it just seem that there alot a shit load of portfolio sites with very basic text nav and a blank area for the work
wondering if its all a bit templatish

generally 'plain' sites with a sprinkle of the person/studio's style, but largely a focus on work.
here's a few..

simple sites own. if you're work is badass mofo, then your site doesn't need to be an attention grabber, i also don't like sites where the work is crammed into a box or something, i like to see lots of blank space around say an identity (in a portfolio) i don't want to see it all f*cking competing with site graphics, etc..
- blackspade0
yea def good points
"i like to see lots of blank space around say an identity (in a portfolio"
- sauerbraten0
hate to admit also, but white or close-to still seems to be the best (lack of) color to display work on too...

I like white backgrounds, plain text, no fancy things (background images, SWFs...), no CSS, works opening in a new window...
- blackspade0
no CSS?
works in new windows ?
hmmm not my cup o tea
- blackspade0
this is my cup of tea
still lots of white space, plain text
like the lil fold in top left
- lara0
i agree, simple is better.. unless you are a company and target a specific audience.
navigation or sth. needs to be smart though.

I've been a student of trendwhore design for a long time. It's hard to accept that uber-minimalism works. :\ Especially when everyone seeing 2advanced (that's not a designers) goes "oooh, aaah!"
- magicpatch0
when my non-designer friends see minimal folio sites, they say things like: "whoa they must not be good a frontpage hey?"
- fate0
Yeah magicpatch. Most of the time it's designers designing for other designers.
- magicpatch0
truth is: i do enjoy minimal sites best... if the work is hot, then even better, you do have to think of clients tho... depending on what they are looking for, im sure they like to see a little more than just type and html, but im not really gonna get in to it, because its a never ending thought
- DaveId0
i don't really think it's even a choice.
you're into what you're into.
if you're into simple content/form stuff then that's what you'll project.
if you're into wack, irrelevant, animated navigation then...
"eye-candy"
*puke
- lara0
nice links sauerbraten...
- magicpatch0
haha! i wonder what daveid thinks
- dablammit0
I say, if you have a great portfolio, go minimalist.
If you are into the newest web technology, then make a crazy ass technical site with all the new in it.
Either way, design firms will most likely consider hiring the first while most big corporations will consider hiring the second.
BTW, my portfolio is either, it just plain needs to come down.
Update coming soon.
