hey, i *acquired* a movie poster today, and i realised that it it is printed on both sides - one side is the normal poster, the other was the reverse mirror image of the other side.
At first, i thought ah the ink just prints that way, all the way through, but it seems like they printed on both sides. Why? Is it for mirror/glass purposes? Tell me! x\
thank you!

well is it really printed, as in, it's the same amount of ink as the front? or is it less? if it's less it could be either the ink running thru the paper or it could be the ink from a poster which was lying below it (and that they didn't give it enough time to dry).

its very slightly lighter than the front. its just as glossy, a standard A1 or A0 movie poster. Its very strange, i wonder if it for a reason, or not...
i dont think its running thru or from a poster below it, cuz all the small text and every detail shows perfectly the same, just reversed and ever so slightly lighter

well i cannot think of one good reason for inverted printing. i can only see more costs.
anyways, my guess is that it's just the combination of paper and the amount of ink used. so basically it's the ink from the front getting thru the back.

Chaps - there is a simple reason for this 'double printed' discovery.
They are printed to be backlit.
How often do you see movie posters outside cinemas on the lightbox poster displays? Well the strength of the light needs to be combatted with double printing so that the light doesnt affect the quality of the image by saturating it/weakening the colours.

hmm, spose so

ahah! man im so stupid :P
makes perfect sense, thanks demoniser

that makes lotsa sense. thanks for the info. you got any info on how it's printed / done / technique? it isn't the same amount of ink and you need to invert the artwork. or is there a trick to it?

What poster is nRic?
Demoniser is right, the posters are dbl sided to enhance the light shining through it. The reverse should be slighhtly meted and perhaps slightly orange to give contrast. The print houses use speacial techniques that are millimetre perfect, I do not know if they tell people there techniques to avoid unofficail reprints. Original movie posters are collectors items (dependant on the movie) and the story behind it.
I myself collector original movie posters think they are a fantastic piece of design if done right (kill Bill namely one, which I have)

i need to get into that stuff. sounds like you can do a lot of other cool stuff with it.
anyways, so an original poster has it's backside printed?

( times out of ten, yeah. But, this has only really come into play over the last 5-10 years. so the classics will be one sided. Some posters that use speacial techniques, embossing, foil block, etc... are obviously not Dbl sided. I have also got a Matrix 'Teaser' poster (release b4 the official main poster) that has a very cool 3D effect on it. These kind of posters cost more to produce so the numbers are limited and only sent to certain cinema's.

do alot of good poster artwork in the UK, you should ask them about printing, etc... they may give proper answers!!! :)

nice to know.
talking about 3d. i saw a nike ad (dunno what you call it in english but it was used at bus stops etc) where the content morphed when you walked by. from some metallic glob to a metallic beckham kicking a ball. not a beckham fan but that was really nice to see. technique has been around for a while but haven't seen it being used for such an ad.

Yeah companies have really refined the lenticular techniques (if that is what they still use) some of them are flawless, I have seen a really nice Harry Potter 3d job.
If you have the cash then Why not and Nike obviously do!!
