osx apps crashing

My osX is acting really strange lately. Eveytime I try to use a Mac utlity or app like software update, disk utility, etc the program crashes? Any idea what it is? It happened after my wife supposedly did a software update while i was at work. I wonder if it's due to the new security flaws.

I cant use the disk utility that crashes too as soon as I select a disk.

I actually had this same problem. It happend after the software update app was installing 10.3.whatever and our power went out. Machine restarted fine, but I couldn't open any apple software.
I had to reinstall the OS.

start up for one of the Install CD's that came with your mac and fix your permissions

you have a font problem, it wasn't the Security Update or your wife or Apple.
go into font book, hit the arrow pulldown and deactivate the users fonts. then try to start up one of those programs. then the fun part will be finding the corrupted font.

I finally found some related info. A lot of people had the problem after updating to 10.3.3. I heard the font issue with Times RO. For me when I had the problem I couldn't even get Font Book to work. Or any other Apple app.
I had to do an archive and install to fix the problem.
