We've just had an enquiry to see if we could produce a full interactive 3D environment (based on a shop floor). ie... walk a character round a shop picking up products and reading what it says on them.
This is all fine, except:
I have no experience doing this kind of thing.
No one here has any experience doing this kind of thing.
I work in a company that produces designs & graphics for exhibitions and point of purchase units and some Web design.
Oh, and it has to be done by NEXT THURSDAY.
'..yeah it'll be with by Monday morning so you can troubleshoot it.'Chodes

We're wondering the best way to say no...
"It would cost you £600,000."
"You don't even know what a CD ROM is so you wouldn't realise when you recieved so what's the point?"
"F*ck off... but please keep using our services for the other work we do for you."
- rasko40
so I just copied the txt file, removed the br tags and just typed returns in simple text.. and it works!! yet on a different site yesterday it wouldn't have it at all and I had to put in br tags everywhere... no sense at all.

so what does this mean?
- rasko40
it means it was in the wrong thread, which you already know because you just posted on the thread after reading it and posting the same useless comment as 2 other people.
but thanks anyway hahah :)

Why not sit down with the client and give them other solutions or your ideas, if you don't have the capabilities to pull that off?
Or, why don't you partner with a firm that can?
Or, why don't you hire a freelancer with the experience and make it happen?
Sounds like you you guys don't really want to do the work. If not, just tell them. what's so hard about that?

my friend had a client ask him to use "PMS 181 AND A HALF" on a project...
as in: PMS 181.5

Why did you say you'd do it. Surely that has to the "dumbest account handler". If someone asks to do some post production we say no. We don't do post production, or plumbing.

I think I may have something that compares...
Built a site for a client that had space for only 10 links on the page as requested - the design of the site won't allow for more as originally agreed upon. Got a call yesterday asking us to remove a link and replace it with a "Continued..." link to a pop-up window which would go to about 100 links and multiple 200x45 banner ads.
nice....

Well you could do a pseudo-3d and restrict it to brid's eye view. (so it's 2d)
Do a little flash character walking with collision detection for the impt parts.
Just a thought.

or you could hire someone that COULD do it for a freelance assignment.
What are the requirements? Does it have to be web-based? If not, what platform would it be for? I know a few people that do realtime 3d stuff. Drop me a line if you're interested:

ok all... the main restrictin for this project was that the client wants it for next thursday (24th). We havent accepted the project either...it was an enquiry. I have already said we/I could do something if it wasnt to be so complex... but it'll take til next thursday to get a propper brief out of them anyway... only posted cos iI thought it was funny, I doubt it will happen... tight arses probably wont wanna pay mroe than a £100 either!

I really don't see how this makes the client dumb. Not their responsibility to know every bit of technology that your company uses.

What about an interactive 3D diorama... I found a great tutorial:
