I work in a BTL agency and create all the interactive work. (I sit in a different room than the print people) Yesterday morning the creative director got everyone in one room and said they needed 2 ads for the agency for a Marketing review magazine, and could everyone come up with concepts by the end of the day.
I scribbled 2 ideas down about 5.30 (very simple ones because it had to go for print the next day.) All the BTL guys spent all day mac-ing up ideas and stuff.
It turns out my ideas were chosen...and lo and behold the copywriter and art director team next door are saying I stole their idea and they told me about it months ago, when we 'went for lunch' together...I've barely spoken to these people let alone had lunch with them! Absolutely unbelievable. I am shocked at the dishonesty....Just had to share this. I think they're insecure about the fact that one of their 30 'creatives' didn't create the winner. Its a sad state of affairs. Has anyone else been through anything similiar?

put them to silence
congrats anyways!

30 creatives! holy shit. thats alot.
And yeah, that is bad form, they will get there comupance,

so why didn;t they present, their idea if theyb thought it was so good.?!

Exactly what I said. I'm sort of speechless at the moment though, cheers for the support!

They're just in fear of their jobs, and well done to yer boss for seeing an idea not exclusive to the creatives. Ideas should be concidered from anywhere and tried out (time permitting) until they're ruled out, no matter the source.
But this is me, I live in the 'ideal world' mode of thinking.
Damn, I wish I wasn't so optimisitic all the time...

i thought that kinda stuff only happened in movies. i'm paranoid of everyone now

well done, youre the best of all theese people!! enjoy your victory and their jealoushy :)

haha, cheers. the funny thing is I don't think they realize that I'm a graphic design graduate. Thats why they are pissed off, they think I'm just 'the web guy'. I even artworked it myself about half an hour ago getting it ready for colour seps and they're like, "who helped you do that?"
Unbelievable.

The sheer lack of communication in offices astounds me sometimes.
Here, the directors rarely let info down to 'the grunts' and it causes "well you should have known that anyway" type problems.
silencer : you should pitch for a pay rise. :)

i can't say that i have had this experience exactly as i am not involved in your backstabbing industry, but i can say this. on a micro-level, involving even just individual people (at work, etc...) a lot of times, i might offer up an opinion,a theory, fact or idea earlier in the day conversation, then at some point later on, I hear the person i told this to repeating
it verbatim with full soverignty. This, along with favortism in the workplace is cancer....check your head(s)...never forget

I see what you're saying but these guys are at definetly at it!

hold on. it can even be worse. it's a combo of silencer's and loudubs experience and it's called: i was just thinking about that. remember this one. this will happen to everyone. if it hasn't happened to you already.
you pitch/tell an idea/concept and they (cd, ad, whoever) go: i was just thinking about that.
it's such a killer. a) they put you below their level and b) make it their idea automatically.

great poster....
yea, people have hidden directives, but mostly people are stupid and they have very short term memories...

set things straight and stand up for yourself in the workplace, it's very similar to a bully situation, once you do they will respect you and not mess with you. explain yoursefl, but do it with a certain tone.
- rabattski0
dunno who said it. but it's really fear based. they can't stand it if they are outsmarted by someone who's "below" them. it threatens their position.
- rabattski0
yep stand up. but it's still a balance between getting fired / keeping the job because, let's face it, the creative business isn't objective. then again i always had fun argueing with the ad or cd then again i couldn't care less if i would be fired which influenced my attitude though. and yes, i'm not working there anymore.

some people are cunning sly fuckers but most are just stupid with ego's like balloons; bown up big, but just a thin, delicate membrane with no real content.
- silencer0
lol Beachboy class! Yeah, fuck those guys.

that's true about the fear-based thing, I once went on an interview and know for a fact that I didn't get the job, because I knew more than their IT director about online marketing and, print, etc. what a joke, f*cking pissants
